         —–PRESS RELEASE—-

During the October 11, 2012 meeting of The American Baptist Men-USA Executive Committee at the West Virginia Baptist Conference Center, Lucky Ray, President of ABMen-USA, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Boy Scouts of America, (BSA). In addition to  members of the Executive Committee, others present for the signing ceremony were: R. Chip Turner, National Chairman BSA Religious Relationships; Mark Wappel, representing the National BSA; and from the WV Baptist Convention, The Rev. Rob Ely, Director of Discipleship, Camping and Youth,  and The Rev. Frank Miller, Director of Operations, Parchment Valley Conference Center.

ABMen-USA and American Baptist Churches have been heavily involved with Scouting in the past. However, because of budget difficulties, lack of volunteers and other reasons, many of our churches do not offer Scouting activities. Lucky Ray said, “Our Mission Statement says that our laymen’s ministry exists not only for men, but also ‘to bring boys into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ’, and this partnership will provide us a wonderful opportunity to accomplish this mission.” Chip turner added, “This closely parallels that of the Association of Baptists for Scouting – “To Bring Youth to Christ Through A Scouting Ministry”.

In the late 1950’s, the American Baptist Men worked with the Baptist Youth Fellowship and Judson Press to produce a booklet titled, “Scouting In A Baptist Church”.  Printed on the back with the American Baptist Men logo, “Fellowship-Growth-Action”,  included the following:

The future of America will be determined by the boys of today! The Men’s Fellowship … should provide leadership for Scouting in the local church. Men should accept the challenge to serve and work with the youth of today in a man-to-boy relationship to serve God and country. This is A JOB FOR MEN. American Baptist Men acknowledge their responsibility to endorse and support  Scouting in every local church. They realize the need to help prepare boys to be morally straight and responsible citizens, recognizing that a strong Christian faith is essential. A JOB FOR MEN!

“Those words are relevant today, but I am not asking all of the men to be Scoutmasters. Our men should encourage their churches to Charter and take ownership of a Scout group, while the men of the church provide mentoring and financial assistance, “ Lucky said.
